During the Discovery Age your Explorer unit (center) is critical for building trading posts.

Players begin with a town center, a small group of colonists, and an explorer. The Explorer unit is unique: aside from having a good line of sight and a special ability letting him snipe environmental hazards in a single shot, he can't be killed by the enemy. If another player defeats your Explorer, he'll crumple to the ground but he'll still be alive. He'll remain 'captured' like that so long as enemies are near him. You can either ransom him back to your town center (literally paying the other player some gold), or you can rescue him by killing all the nearby enemies and allowing him to heal back up.

Although players in the Discovery Age don't have very many units, it's a pretty frantic age because there's a lot you'll want to do. First, you want to grow your economy fast, which at this stage means finding food (Age III has tons of animals to hunt) and building more settlers. There's usually a good supply of resources around the town center.

More importantly, the Discovery Age is where you use your Explorer to find key points on the map. He'll discover little treasures scattered about (giving you bonus food or gold etc.). He can also find the major roads and locate the trading post sites and native villages. Only the Explorer can build trading posts. You'll want to do this! You want to claim as many of these sites for your nation. The cumulative rewards for doing so build up in a big way over time. If you manage to build a couple trading posts and your opponents each build only one, the effects will mount up: you'll get more shipments and your Home City will advance faster.

The Colonial Age

Before long you'll move to the second age. Players who wish to rush their opponents will usually advance to here and then start sending over the musketeers. By now, especially if you've located and built several trading posts, shipments form the Home City should be coming at a good rate. If you keep shipping over military units, they can immediately attack your opponents. This in turn will give you experience, which will cause shipments to come faster -- it's possible to steamroll over other players this way if you caught them with their pants down.

If you're not rushing, then you'll use the colonial age to crank on your economy, trying to quickly get to the next age. Sending over shipments of colonists can make a huge difference here. Some people I talked to at Ensemble said that the only way to play is to truck over colonists as soon as each shipment is available during the first couple of ages.

Shipments from the Home City can also help you correct any mistakes you make in your play. During one game I realized I hadn't placed enough colonists on harvesting wood, and I desperately wanted to build a bunch of buildings. Rather than wait, I simply shipped over wood from the Home City -- tons of it. Great piles of it appeared outside my Town Center where it was easily harvested and I was able to go on an immediate building spree. Of course, this wouldn't have been an issue if I had planned better, but it was nice that I was able to correct my mistake.

During the middle game you can use your Home City to build up your economy or to support a rush attack.

The Fortress Age

After collecting enough resources to go to the third age, the game really starts to feel like Age of Empires III. Starting with the Fortress Age you can start building cannons, and by this time your economy should be cranking fast enough that you can build a sizeable army at home instead of relying on shipments.

At this point, battles over trading posts and Native villages start getting pretty furious. You'll need those cannons if the player has built any static defenses, or if you want to knock down their trading posts in order to build up your own. A good mix of units is necessary, since your opponents will usually have a standing army. If you try to roll toward them with nothing but cannons, you'll be slaughtered. Screen your artillery with infantry and use cavalry to flank around and destroy any of their artillery before they can get close to your possessions.

Players didn't seem to linger in this age for very long, so you need to keep an eye on your economy in order that you don't get left behind. There was some disagreement as to the best way to use shipments during this later part of the game: if you save up a couple for emergencies, you can generate a large army tailored to your specific needs almost out of thin air. It's great to have a couple of shipments ready to go if you're surprise attacked; you can call up emergency reinforcements from the Home City almost immediately. Other players insisted that you need to use those shipments right away. It depends on your play style.

The Industrial Age

When players advance to this age the map starts to look considerably different. Whereas it was originally a pastoral landscape teaming with wildlife, by this time there are outposts everywhere, soldiers guarding trading posts, and huge cities of buildings often guarded with walls. The dirty ruts that originally marked the roads are now replaced by twin railroad tracks, with gorgeous steam locomotives chugging along.

Meanwhile, fighting between players has reached its peak. If your economy can't continually crank out large armies of various units by this age, you're going to lose. (And don't forget to build houses -- that's the bottleneck that always did me in during playtesting.) Battles in the third age tended to be relatively small, but by the Industrial Age isn't not uncommon to see long lines of musketeers or mobs of dragoons charging into battle. Large groups of cannons make short work of enemy structures: If even four or five get within range of a building, it doesn't stand for very long.

At this point in the game, you'll have to really start paying attention to formation battle tactics, making sure that your large army isn't flanked or mobbed together where it's susceptible to cannonfire. Between your economy and the Home Shipments (which should come pretty fast given the intensity of the fighting), there's no reason you shouldn't have tons of units spewing forth from your town: it's all battlefield tactics form here.

The Imperial Age

Yes, Age of Empires III has a fifth age! The Imperial Age is unlike the others, and the designers consider it a sort of "tiebreaker" age. It costs an obscene amount of resources to advance to Imperial, easily ten times as much as the previous ages. But it opens the door to 'superunits' like Imperial Artillery or Imperial Dragoons who are absolutely devastating on the battlefield.

During our playtime with the game we never had cause to go Imperial, so we don't know what all it entails. However, the intent is that the Imperial Age will end any stalemate. If a couple of players are locked in stagnant combat for a while, the first player able to invest the considerable resources to go Imperial will be able to turn the tide.
